In an earlier post I noted that I got started late in my Madison Bumgarner snotrocket tallying career. Bumgarner made his major league debut in September 2009 but I only started officially tallying snotrockets in 2012 (I have rough snotrocket numbers from the 2011 season). But recently I discovered that I can now watch every Bumgarner appearance in a major league game; this meant that I would be able to at some point compile complete career Bumgarner snotrocket totals which made me incredibly happy. Last night I re-watched Bumgarner’s first big league start and it was everything that I hoped it would be.
Here’s a nice shot of Bumgarner in the dugout before taking the field in his major league debut:
A quiet moment before throwing his first major league pitch:
I live-tweeted the momentous occasion and felt it only fair to give warning what was about to happen:
One of the greatest periods in San Francisco Giants history begins:
San Francisco Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper remarks on what a huge moment this is for the Giants left hander:
While Kuiper’s TV partner Mike Krukow makes note of Bumgarner’s approach to the mound:
One of Madison Bumgarner’s teammates offers some sage advice to the rookie before his first pitch:
At exactly 7:14 PM history is made:
And five minutes later history of a slightly lesser sort is made:
I was so grateful for the opportunity to see all of this:
Bumgarner got the start that September night because the Giants regularly scheduled starting pitcher, Tim Lincecum, was experiencing back spasms. Upon learning this a fan at the ballpark made a last minute adjustment to his jersey:
Other Giants fans showed their support of Madison Bumgarner as well:
Of course it wasn’t all snotrockets, loogies and fan support in Bumgarner’s first MLB start:
When the snotrockets did happen though they were something special:
A first at-bat in the majors is an important moment:
Here are Madison Bumgarner’s snotrocket totals and other vital statistics for Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at home vs. the San Diego Padres:
- ND, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 HR, 7 SNR (snotrockets): 0 vs. lefties, 0 vs. righties, 7 other. 1 pre-game SNR. 2 at-bat SNR. 1 dugout SNR. 1 double SNR.
- Madison Bumgarner’s most prolific innings were the 2nd, 3rd and 4th in which he blew 2 snotrockets in each inning.
- Madison Bumgarner with 7 snotrockets so far in the 2009 season.
The snotrocket tweets and stats were the meat and potatoes of this blog post. It’s now time for the dessert: the snotrocket screencaps. These screencaps aren’t of the highest quality because the video of MLB games from even 8 years ago is a little fuzzy and not as HD as they are now. But still we have them and that’s something to be grateful for. Here’s the aforementioned first Madison Bumgarner MLB on camera snotrocket:
Madison Bumgarner’s first major league loogie, in two parts:
Second snotrocket in his first at-bat:
A snotrocket on the way back to the dugout:
Two minutes later a snotrocket in the top of the 3rd:
Then the right nostril:
Bengie Molina was the Giants starting catcher in 2009 and he was behind the plate for Madison Bumgarner’s major league debut. Buster Posey was fresh up out of the minors and with the club during Bumgarner’s start but he spent the game in the bullpen:
Bumgarner left with the lead in the top of the 6th inning and received a standing ovation from the fans. He tipped his cap in appreciation:
Attaboy Madison Bumgarner. It was an incredible experience to watch your first major league start and to tally your first major league snotrockets. Thank you for your pitching and snotrocketing excellence.
Thanks must also go to Major League Baseball for making available this game to view eight years after it happened and to Baseball Reference, a great website that is an invaluable resource for baseball statistics. From their site I was able to get Bumgarner’s pitching stats and other important details like the start time of the game which is oh so important for calculating the exact time that each snotrocket occurred. I am grateful to both.
Madison Bumgarner’s next start in 2009 occurred on Saturday, September 19, 2009 on the road vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers. I’m not sure exactly when I will tally the snotrockets for that game but when I do I’ll be sure to post all the relevant info here. I’ll probably also live tweet the snotrockets too so you should follow me on Twitter for all the exciting delayed Bumgarner snotrocket action. You’ll be glad you did.
